Committee Reports:
Nominating: Paul & Charlotte Bushue presented the slate of officers:
President -- Bob Anderson
Vice Pres.—Win Anderson
Secretary. Ann Cady
Treasurer----Janice Veal
There being no additional nominations from the floor, Jeff Gent moved that a unanimous ballot be cast for the slate as presented. Seconded by Nancy Bush. It was moved, seconded and passed. The regular 2 year terms are staggered for the first election - president & secretary for 2 year terms; vice pres. & treasurer for 1 year.
Fundraising:
Holiday Hideaway Home & Garden Tour: The event is Sunday, May 18th and benefits GIHS and the community center bathroom remodel.
Scarecrow Project: Bob is working with those participating and the project is on track.
Dinner Cruise: Janice Veal will report at the June meeting.
Dinner Auction: Rose reported this project is on hold since Sandy Warmouth is now busy with the pavilion project.
Oral History: Paul reported that about 10% of the suggested oral histories have been completed. Carol Harma has done many of the oral history tapes and has also worked on transcribing the tapes. Carol suggested that it would be good to interview an individual twice because she found that items were missed in the first taping.
Memories Night: As with the first memories night, a capacity crowd enjoyed the evening. Janice & Dawn thanked members for their help. Alex taped the event. Janice will get the tapes from the first memories night and copies will be made. Discussion followed about new topics and formats for the 3rd memories night to be planned for mid September. Interest focused on background information on island places (church, cemetery, stores, the resort, etc.) and the folklore of the first residents (Samish).
Collections: Rose reported that all the procedures are in place to begin accepting material but that volunteers are needed to handle this.. Alex and the Bushues offered to work on this.
Records: No report.
Other Business:
Non-Profit Corporation Status: Bud met with the officers plus Al Bush and Carl Cady to review the material. Al had checked with an insurance agent and found that general liability and director & officer coverage would run about $2000 year. Carl offered to research the federal 1997 Volunteer Protection Act. The group will meet again and present information at the June meeting. Bob reminded members to review the proposed budget for additions/changes before the June meeting since this is part of the incorporation process.
Promotional Flyer: Alex & Betty will have a draft for the June meeting.
Logo: A suggestion was made that GIHS have a logo. This will be investigated.
LineTime.org: Bob asked everyone to check the GIHS information on the site so that content could be discussed at the June meeting.
The remaining half hour was spent in an open, informal discussion involving island history. Bob opened the discussion by asking Alex, as a new island person, what he would like to know about the island. Alex said he was interested in information on island places. Jeff was asked what he would like people to know about our island. He said he was interested in learning about the old-time residents and a time-line on when things happened. Bud Ashbach expressed interest in learning about the off-island lives of island people. A suggestion was made for a map showing the “layers of Guemes people.”
The meeting was adjourned at 9pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Ann Cady, Secretary
